Larrianne Daine Lag- pacan has always enjoyed cooking with her family, so when she experienced the culinary op- portunities available in the hospitality industry during the ClimbHI LEI (Leader- ship, Exploration, Inspira- tion) program as a senior at Konawaena High School, she was inspired to pursue formal training at Hawaiʻi Community College – Pāla- manui.
For LEI Students, It’s The ‘Climb’
By Julie Morikawa, president of ClimbHI
“I have learned so much about myself, as well as different hotels and chefs,” says Lagpacan, who is a sec- ond-generation immigrant from the Philippines and is the first person in her family to attend college.
“LEI showed me how the industry works, and it made me more passionate about what I could accomplish,” says Lagpacan.
LEI is a Hawai‘i Tourism Authority-sponsored work- force development program created by ClimbHI to in- spire Hawai‘i’s youth to pursue careers in the state’s visitor industry by provid- ing them with the means to achieve success. The pro- gram exposes high school students to potential careers and provides college stu- dents with hands-on expe- rience through internships. This is the 10th year of LEI events.
After graduating from the culinary program and cook- ing in events such as the Big Island Chocolate Fes- tival, Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, Hilo Classic Food Show and more, Lagpacan gained first-hand experience in a professional kitchen as a pastry cook at the Fair- mont Orchid.
