  WOrganized Chaos
ell, it’s the beginning of February and I still have not taken down or put away our Christ- mas decorations. I guess in some ways I uncon-
sciously tried to extend the holiday season as we’ve just come off one of the worst years in history.
I’m not the only one trying to extend the feel-good sea- son. I normally take down the decorations when the 24/7 Hallmark channel Christmas shows end. That’s the signal to my wife that it’s time to move on and get on with a new year.
However, she told me that Hallmark is going to continue this “hook” by playing a Christmas show once a week until the new 24/7 season starts. In 2020, the season started just before Halloween, so this year I’m thinking it will start right after Easter. That’s not a bad thing, but it certainly threw off my decoration storage schedule.
In years past, I admit to procrastinating. However, our neighborhood association has rules about how long these things can stay up. I once just unplugged all the lights ex- cept for the red ones and tried to pass it off as Valentine’s Day decorations, but it didn’t fly.
I think I am now being monitored by satellite. Seriously, if you look up my address on Google Maps satellite street view, my house still has Christmas decorations on it.
Anyway, I plan to put everything away this weekend. If you think that’s a simple task, then you’ve never decorated your house the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation way!
I have 10 Rubbermaid storage containers in my garage specifically for this monumental undertaking. The problem I have every year is making everything fit back into the containers. It would probably fit, if I packed it like my wife does for her assigned containers.
Namely, hers are the tree decorations and Christmas ce- ramic village containers. She carefully wraps each decora- tion in a paper towel and lovingly places them in a recycled gift box. The village pieces are put back in their original boxes and, like a puzzle, fit into the container perfectly.
I’m in charge of everything else, which includes the nearly billion strings of Christmas lights. I just want to get it done in order to go back to being a couch potato, so I merely ball up the lights in a tangled mess and deal with it 11 months from now.
So, when my neighbors wonder why there’s so much swearing coming from my house so near to Christmas, this is the reason why.
