I Old Dog, New Tricks
t would be nice if I could stop the ageing clock. No matter what I do, it keeps going forward and I “cel- ebrate” another birthday. Of course, the alternative
is worse, as stopping the clock means I’ve pretty much checked out of life. So, don’t get me wrong — I’m not complaining. Rather, I’m concerned that with each passing year, I take on the indicators that I’m simply getting old. I decided to sit down and make a list of those markers. See how many of these apply to you. If they do, maybe we can form some kind of club called “The Geezers.” Here’s my list:
1. When I blow my nose, it sounds like a horn or goose honking.
2. In drinking my morning cup of coffee, I must use the same mug, which for me is from the Humbug’s Towing Ser- vice in Wahiawā (the late owner was my father-in-law’s friend and neighbor). I’ve had it for the past 15 years.
3. Most of my shirts are now worn untucked. I also have no use for a belt.
4. I no longer listen to music in my car. I tune in to news.
5. The only dance I can do halfway decent is The Electric Slide.
6. If my haircut costs more than 20 bucks including tip, it’s not happening.
7. If the TV remote is not where I last left it, I go ballistic. 8. I check my mailbox every day, including federal holidays. 9. To save electricity, I turn off all the lights even though
they are LED.
10. I hide my iPhone charging cord so no one else uses it. 11. Two of the greatest gifts I’ve recently received from my
family are a shoe-shine kit and a telescoping back scratcher. 12. The recliner directly in front of the TV is mine.
13. My method for cleaning the crud off my barbecue grill
is to burn it off the next time I use it.
14. I religiously use store punch cards. (When completely
filled out, you get one free of the item you’ve been buying.) 15. Even though I have an iPhone, I still keep a photo of my
wife, son and daughter in my wallet.
16. In my top dresser drawer, I have a small box of keys that
I don’t know what they belong to.
17. I have every tool known to man, except the one I need. 18. I make more noise getting into and out of chairs than
when I do situps.
19. I trick myself into thinking that no one knows I give our
dogs, Buddy and Wilson, food from my plate. 20. I make lists.
