ur family has a fairly extensive list of movies that we’ve watched and enjoyed together as our kids were growing up. The Lindsey Lohan version of
The Parent Trap and Mean Girls are two we love. Same for Amanda Bynes’ She’s the Man. What makes them fun is that nothing like that really happens in real life, so we can laugh all we want. That is, until you look at the Nagasawa family.
I recently had an experience with our 24-year-old daugh- ter that can be best explained by comparing it to the 2003 version of the movie Freaky Friday. Again, this movie stars Lohan as the teen daughter to a middle-aged mother played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Their relationship on screen is adver- sarial, kind of a typical mother/daughter relationship you can find anywhere in America.
At the height of their arguing, during which they each think their own life is tougher than the other’s, they magical- ly switch bodies so the daughter is now in her mother’s body and vice versa. That’s all I’ll say about the movie in case you’ve never seen it. Anyway, the other week, my daughter and I seemed to experience our own “freaky Friday.” Our daughter recently traded in her vehicle for a “new” used car. We were quite proud as she completely financed it herself with no need for me or her mother as a cosigner. It was officially her car.
She excitedly wanted to take us for a ride in order to christen it. As she was going to drive, I immediately called “shotgun!” I had forgotten that in this hierarchy, I am only third in command so my wife took the front passenger seat. I reluctantly took the seat behind our daughter.
As we embarked on a now-impromptu trip to the store (for my wife), I took out a snack-sized bag of Doritos from my pocket. Hearing the crackling of the package, my daughter cried out, “Dad, there is no eating in my car!” OK, I get it. “Fine,” I replied. I then demanded that she turn up the air conditioner citing that the backseat was too hot.
I also complained that the radio was too loud and asked if she could change it to one of my preferred channels. She snapped back with a “no” and proceeded to tell me not to push on the back of her seat with my knees. I argued that I wasn’t even doing that and started playing with the window control to get some air. That caused their hair to swirl out of control and my daughter was now yelling, “Dad, don’t make me come back there!” Frustrated, I closed the window and decided to check my email on my mobile phone.
I think all this occurred in about eight minutes of the ride. I looked up from my phone and asked, “Are we there yet?”
