A Master Class In Acting

If February weren’t the shortest month of the year, it’ d still be Black History Month. We all know about Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and, of course, Martin Luther King Jr. Unwavering men murdered during their herculean quests for equality. A name not nearly as well-known is Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panthers. The new fea- ture film based on his short life and death, Judas and the Black Messiah, fixes to change that.
Judas and the Black Messi- ah portrays the FBI’s efforts to silence Hampton, and si- lence him for good. Agent Roy Mitchell, played deftly by Jesse Plemons, employs a two-bit car thief, Bill O’Neal, to infiltrate the Black Panthers in Chicago. What follows is cringe-worthy. The film de- scends into a slow spiral of government wielding its full and terrible power to destroy a man completely while simul- taneously crushing the soul of another. This is not an escapist film. It is mightily tragic.
The business end of this movie is actor Daniel Kaluuya. His Hampton is loaded with wit, charm, tenderness and ab- solutely stirring conviction. It can’t be easy playing a “messi- ah,” but Kaluuya slays it.
ing is wrong, but he can’t get out from under. Stanfield may not get as many accolades as Kaluuya simply because of the nature of the characters that they play, but his performance is so good that ironically, it’s sometimes hard to watch.

Obviously, this film is packed with political state- ments, and it has been released during a time in which many people are fatigued with all things political. Honestly, I had a tough time clicking play. However, I’m glad I did. I nev- er felt like I was being lectured.

Shifting became the watchword as we wound our way forward during Covid 19. Wine’d Down was our way of staying in touch while providing valuable information to our friends and the community. I often scratch my head when people build without permits. Sure, a permit slows
the process, but sometimes life just takes over, I suppose. My new friend recently told me, “I had one kid and built a room then another”..and so forth. So, what is “as built”? When an owner wishes to correct additions/improvementsaddedwithoutapermit,they must do so via an “as built” permit. Keep in mind, there are many scenarios that could apply. I’ll touch on a few. First, an “as built” permit costs twice the amount of a normal permit. The first step is to hire atop-notchdraftsperson(orarchitect)whowilldraw blueprints showing what’s there. If you have plans on- hand, it will help. Check your permit status. If you had a permit and just never completed the project, an open permitshouldallowapplicationofthebuildingcodes in effect when the permit was issued. If a new permit is needed, current code will apply. When electrical and plumbing are not exposed, the inspectors will likely ask you to make these systems available for their inspection. A licensed plumber and electrician must pull those permits. Another challenge is often hurricane straps. Current code also requires solar
hot water. Your draftsperson should be able to advise you on your situation. One final challenge relates to wastewater. Shared cesspools are a no-no and the last I was told, a change in bedroom count will trigger anupgradetoseptic.Remember,ifyourplanisto sell within a year (or if the original permit was owner- builder), a licensed contractor will need to final the permit. While it is possible to sell “as is”, the million- dollar question is how much correcting permits will increasethevalue.Withoutknowingthecosttocure, it’s impossible to know. I just closed a home with permit hiccups at $150k less than seller could have expected to garner with corrected permits! There are afewcontractorswhospecializeinthistypeproject but be patient, everyone is crazy busy and corrections could take time. So, there it is in a nutshell. Best of luck and, by the way, if you are thinking of improving without permits, please re-think it because correcting after the fact is much, much harder than doing it correctly the first time...isn’t that how things normally are anyway!
