A Flintstone Time
s you might imagine, I get a ton of emails, letters and phone calls from people with story sugges- tions, complaints and praise, and sometimes they
just want to talk story.
I answer my own phone and occasionally end up staying
on longer than I really want. But, hey, it’s the job (please don’t start calling me). Then, the other day, I received kind of a random phone call. The caller said, “Hi Ron, my name is Alvin Wong. Did you know that all military hospitals have a sundial? For instance, Tripler hospital has one.”
Bracing myself for one of “those phone calls,” I said I did not know that. Alvin then asked if I was at a computer and told me to pull up the URL sundials.org. OK, I took the bait. He said to look up the state of Maryland, specifically the city of Bethesda. Curiously, it showed a sundial with a plaque that reads, “This sundial stood on the grounds of the Old Naval Hospital at Hospital Point Pearl Harbor, Hawai‘i, during the Japanese attack of 7 December 1941.”
Of course, this begs the question: What is it doing in Bethesda, Maryland? Alvin didn’t have an answer, but said that he did try to find out, taking his request all the way up to asking U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye before he passed.
He never got an answer. Alvin then proceeded to tell me that there are several sundials on O‘ahu. There’s even one that is 28 feet in diameter and is located “right under our noses” in Pearl City. I actually lived in Pearl City when I first got married and said, “No way!”
He said it’s in the community garden near Home Depot. There’s a children’s sundial garden, and it’s screened by koa and lonomea trees. I guess we’re so busy looking at our phones and Apple Watches to know the time of day, that we forget the origins of this most important part of our lives. Time is the most valuable thing we have.
Now I was really hooked. Alvin continued educating me. He then asked, “Did you know that there’s a sundial on all the Mars land rovers, including the one that just landed, Per- severance?” Sure enough, I looked it up and he was right. How about that? The most advanced technology in history just landed on Mars and it still uses a sundial!
Alvin apologized for taking up so much of my “time” and ended the call. I think that a lot of us don’t make the effort to listen.
Whether it’s a random person, your kids or your spouse, you’d be surprised the things you learn by putting away that mobile phone and really listen to what someone has to say.
It’s about time.
